Why let the dragon get close? The archer solves most of Britannia from forty paces, then sits down by the fire and whittles tomorrow's ammunition.
An archer is a dexxer who fights at range. Everything the knight does, you do from across the room, which means a great many monsters never land a single hit on you. Against anything slow, melee-only and angry, an archer is close to untouchable.
The skill that makes it sing is Bowcraft/Fletching. You chop a tree, saw the logs into boards, whittle the boards into shafts, add feathers, and you have arrows — thousands of them, for free, forever. An archer who buys arrows from a shop is an archer who hasn't read this page.
The catch is footwork. You cannot fire while you're running, so an archer's whole game is a rhythm: stop, shoot, step back, stop, shoot. Learn that rhythm and you're deadly. Ignore it and you'll spend every fight being chased around a room by something you could have killed twice over.
You get 700 skill points in total, which is seven skills at 100 (Grandmaster). Here is a sheet that works, and why each line is on it. You can load this exact spread on the hero sheet in the magazine and slide the numbers around.
| Skill | Points | Why it's here |
|---|---|---|
| Archery | 100 | Your weapon skill. Decides whether the arrow lands. |
| Tactics | 100 | Flat damage multiplier, same as for any fighter. |
| Anatomy | 100 | More damage, and it speeds up your bandages. |
| Healing | 100 | Bandages. You'll take less damage than a knight, but when you do take it there's no shield to hide behind. |
| Resisting Spells | 100 | Casters are the archer's natural enemy — they hit you at your own range. Don't skimp. |
| Bowcraft/Fletching | 100 | Free arrows forever, plus you make your own bows. The skill that pays for the character. |
| Chivalry | 100 | Healing, cure and Sacred Journey without reagents. Swap for Hiding if you'd rather open fights from the shadows. |
| Total | 700 | of 700 |
You can't use a shield with a bow, so Parrying does nothing for a pure archer. That freed slot is exactly why Fletching fits on this sheet.
A Grandmaster fletcher makes exceptional bows, and exceptional bows hit noticeably harder than shop ones. You are not just saving arrow money — you're upgrading your main weapon.
Skills go up by using them, and they go up fastest on a task that is just barely hard for you. Climb the rungs in order — each one stops paying off, and that's your cue to move up.
Buy Archery, Tactics, Anatomy and Healing up to 30 from NPC trainers. Then find the nearest farm. Chickens, sheep and rabbits don't fight back, which is perfect while your aim is terrible.
Sit down with a hatchet and a fletcher's kit. Chop logs, saw boards, make shafts — thousands of them. Shafts are the cheapest Fletching gain in the game and you need them anyway. Do this while chatting; it needs no attention.
Take your home-made bow to Despise or the orc fort. Start practising the stop-shoot-step rhythm properly. Most archers plateau here not because of skill but because they keep trying to fire while moving.
Deeper dungeons, and deliberately pick targets that run at you — it forces the footwork to become automatic. Your Fletching should hit Grandmaster around here just from keeping yourself in arrows.
Destard. A dragon that can't reach you is a pile of scales and gold with extra steps. Bring 500 arrows, bandages, and patience.
Buy this before you do anything else. Total damage to your purse is small, and every item on the list earns itself back in an hour.
| What | Where | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| A bow | Any bowyer or weaponsmith | Start with a plain bow. A composite bow or heavy crossbow later, once you know which speed you like. |
| A fletcher's tool kit | Bowyer | The one tool that turns boards into arrows. Buy two; they wear out. |
| A hatchet | Any provisioner | For chopping trees into logs. Doubles as an emergency melee weapon. |
| 500 arrows to start | Bowyer | Only until your Fletching takes over. After that you'll never buy ammunition again. |
| Feathers | Butcher, or loot from birds | Arrows need shafts and feathers. Everyone forgets the feathers. |
| 200 bandages | Tailor | No shield means no Parrying. Bandages are your whole defence when something closes the gap. |
The right room makes training three times faster. These are the spots worth a rune.
Chickens and sheep that don't fight back. The gentlest possible place to learn to aim.
Forest everywhere. The best log supply in the realm, and the Abbey nearby for banking.
Dragons and drakes. The archer's signature hunting ground because almost nothing in there can touch you if you keep your distance.
Trainers, a bowyer and a beginner dungeon within a short walk. Ideal first hour.
This is the single most important fact about archery, and it's the one nobody tells new players. Stop moving, fire, then move. If a fight feels impossible, you are almost certainly trying to shoot on the run.
Once Fletching is high, every batch produces a few exceptional bows. Keep the best one, sell the rest. You'll be carrying a better weapon than most people can buy.
A thousand arrows is heavy, and an overloaded archer moves like a cart. Carry a few hundred and stash the rest in a bag at home.
Don't dress like a knight. Wear light armour, stay mobile, and let distance be your protection. An archer in full plate is slow, out of stamina, and still getting hit.
Britannia runs on favours. These are the people you want in your party and on your friends list.
